Attrition Modeling in the Presence of Decoys: An Operations-other-than-War Motivation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Under various operational conditions, in particular in operations other than war (OOTW) or peacekeeping, an intervening force, here Blue, must occasionally engage in attrition warfare with an opposing force, here Red, that is intermingled with noncombatants. Desirably, Red armed actives are targeted, and not the unarmed noncombatants. This article describes some simple Lanchesterian attrition models that reflect a certain capacity of Blue to discriminate noncombatants from armed and active Red opponents. An explicit extension of the Lanchester square law results: Blue’s abstinence concerning the indiscriminate shooting of civilians mixed with Red’s is essentially reflected in a lower Blue rate of fire and less advantageous exchange rate. The model applies to other situations involving decoys, and reflects the value of a discrimination capability. q 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 44: 507–514, 1997

Discrimination Options in the Near Term
Estimating midcourse threats and deriving optimal numbers of decoys produces an integrated picture of the trades between boost-phase attrition, midcourse defenses, and discrimination. Boost and midcourse interceptors can be effective, but are sensitive to light decoys. If discrimination is not available at the outset of deployment, enough interceptors must be purchased to meet both the RVs and ...
متن کاملAn Analysis of the War of Attrition and the All-Pay Auction
We study the war of attrition and the all-pay auction when players’ signals are affiliated and symmetrically distributed. We (a) find sufficient conditions for the existence of symmetric monotonic equilibrium bidding strategies; and (b) examine the performance of these auction forms in terms of the expected revenue accruing to the seller. Under our conditions the war of attrition raises greater...

The concept of Effects-Based Operations (EBO), enabled by Network-Centric Warfare (NCW), is developing rapidly as diplomats and war planners move to confront global threats in the new millennium. Modeling the NCW EBO process attempts to codify the belief structure and reasoning of adversaries and their cause-effect relationships with US and coalition actions, including mitigating undesired effe...

The present study probed 409 Iranian English as foreign language (EFL) learners' motivation and attitude toward English as an International Language (EIL) by investigating the causal relationships of their facets via Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). To do so, the Persian version of the ‘attitudes toward EIL’ scale was designed and validated. It measures five constructs of: cultural realism, ...
